Model numbers and codes
The label is often inside the door frame, along the side of a refrigerator compartment, behind a dishwasher door, under a washer or dryer lid, or on the frame of an oven. See where to find your GE model and serial number. If you cannot locate it, a photo of the whole appliance helps.
Codes depend on the appliance and the control. Look yours up in the are explained on the error codes page., where each entry gives GE’s meaning and the checks an owner can do from the outside. Some codes, such as the F-series codes on ranges and wall ovens, call for a technician.
No. A microwave showing 888 after the power returns is normal, and a washer that says its lid has not been opened only wants the lid opened and closed. Other codes point to a real fault.
Safety
Leave the home right away without lighting anything or touching switches. Phone your gas utility once you are outside, and leave the search for the source to them. A burner that clicks without lighting is a separate matter, covered in this article.
Stop if you see sparks, smell burning, find water around electrical connections or notice an oven door or panel that is damaged. Unplug it if the plug is within safe reach, or turn off its breaker.
What owners can check
Stay on the outside of the appliance. Confirm it has power, check the breaker and any GFCI outlet, make sure the door or lid closes fully, look at the door gasket, open the water supply valve, and look at visible drain hoses. Clean a filter or lint screen only where the manual lets owners do it, and clear dust from a vent or grille. Our common problems page lists checks by symptom.
We do not recommend it. Panels cover live circuits, gas fittings and sealed refrigeration parts.

Yes. Mention the building when you book, along with elevator reservations, loading rules or any association requirement, so the visit goes smoothly.
It depends on what failed, how the rest of the appliance is doing and how you use it. Our article on repairing or replacing a GE appliance offers a way to think it through. Browse the repair services for your appliance type.
