About this model

Model overview

Reading the label of a 36-inch hood

The JVW prefix sits in GE’s ventilation group alongside JV and JVX. The 5361 is a feature level; GE lists the hood at 36 inches wide under the GE name. The number ends in ES, which GE uses for slate, so a stainless or black hood of similar number is not the same finish. Matching finish matters if a trim piece or cover ever needs ordering.

Is it the hood, or the house?

A struggling fan sometimes has nothing wrong with the hood. Long ducts, extra bends, a closed damper, a blocked cap outside or a kitchen that is sealed tight can all reduce airflow. Our diagnosis tests the hood first and then looks at what the hood is connected to. If the fan runs at full speed but air barely moves, the ductwork is a candidate.

What you can look at

  • Is the outside cap clear of lint, leaves or a nest?
  • Do the filters need washing, per your manual?
  • Does opening a window nearby change the airflow? That would suggest the kitchen is starved for makeup air.

What stays closed

The blower housing, wiring and any panel behind the filters. Electrical parts above the cooktop are for a technician.

Filters and finish

A slate finish hides fingerprints but shows grease film. Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, not an abrasive pad, and keep sprays away from the control and light areas. A tidy hood is easier for us to work on, too.

When the fan is dead

If nothing happens at any speed, test the lights; if they work, the control or motor is suspect, and if they do not, power is. Look at the breaker. A hood that stops mid-cooking and restarts after a pause may be warning of heat or a motor problem, which is worth telling us.
