Model overview

If you smell gas, stop reading and act

Get everyone out of the kitchen, keep flames and light switches untouched, and phone the gas company once you are outside. Searching for the leak is not your job. Our post on gas-smell safety steps run through the same order. Once the utility has cleared the home, we can look at why the range misbehaved.

What this range is

GE lists the GGF400PVBB as a 30-inch gas range, and BB is the black finish code. GE shows stainless and white siblings of the same model. In the number, GG marks a GE gas range, which is how you tell it from the electric ranges that start GR or JB. That difference is the single most important fact for a repair: a gas range has a fuel supply, and fuel connections are for a licensed technician only.

What you can safely do

  • Read any code on the display and write it down.
  • Check that the clock and lights come on, which tells you whether the range has power at all.
  • Look at whether the oven door closes squarely.
  • Wipe cooled burner surfaces and the area around them with a damp cloth, leaving everything in place.

That is where owner action ends. Do not remove burner parts to clean ports, do not touch the gas valve or hose behind the range, and do not tilt the range out of its spot. If a burner clicks without lighting, our post on a burner that clicks but does not light explains what is worth noting for us.

Faults that bring people to us

A burner that will not light, an oven that never reaches temperature, a display that blanks and a door that stays locked after cleaning cover most of it. The electronic oven controls on GE ranges report faults as F-codes. Sensor codes F3 and F4, the door lock code F9 and the control codes F5 and F8 are all documented; GE’s answer for each is to call a trained service technician. Start with F3 or F9 if your screen shows one.
