About this model

Model overview

A countertop unit, so start at the outlet

The JES prefix is GE’s countertop microwave group, which sets the JES834WD apart from over-the-range models that carry a JVM or PVM prefix. Because it sits on a counter and plugs into a wall outlet, the first checks are simple and sit entirely outside the case. Is the plug fully seated? Does the outlet work with a lamp? If the outlet sits on a GFCI circuit, has it tripped? If a power strip is involved, take it out of the picture and use the wall outlet directly.

A display that says PF or 888

After you plug in or after a power cut, a GE microwave can show PF, 888 or 8888. Nothing is broken; the oven is simply waking up. Pressing Clear/Off or Cancel/Off and setting the clock gets you back to normal. If you see it with no outage at all, the page for PF / 888 / 8888 explains what GE considers normal and what to tell us if it repeats.

Heat versus sound and light

A microwave that lights, turns the plate and beeps but leaves food cold has an issue with the part that produces microwave energy or the circuit feeding it. Never open the case to look; the inside holds a stored charge even after unplugging. An unusual hum, a burning smell or sparks should end use at once. Our posts on a microwave that sparks and a microwave that stops mid-cycle list safe observations to collect.

Where it sits matters

On a small apartment counter, a microwave is often pushed against a wall or tucked under a cabinet. Leave a gap around the case so vents are not blocked. Some city kitchens have deep Victorian-era counters with little ventilation behind the appliance, and blocked vents can make the unit shut down.

What to tell us

  • The model number from the label (the label is on the case, usually the back or side)
  • Any code on the display
  • Whether the lamp and turntable work
  • Whether the door closes firmly
