GE Microwave Repair in San Francisco and the Bay Area

No heat, a dead display, sparks or an F-code: we diagnose over-the-range, countertop and Advantium GE microwaves.

At a glance

Overview

Three kinds of GE microwave, three sets of problems

A microwave is the appliance people replace first and ask about last, mostly because the failure seems small: the plate stops warming food, the display goes blank, a buzzing starts, or sparks appear against the wall of the cavity. We diagnose GE and GE Profile microwaves in San Francisco and the Bay Area, in your home, and put the estimate in writing ahead of any work. If a repair makes no sense for the unit, we say that too, and you decide.

The kind of microwave matters more than almost anything else, so start there.

Over-the-range, countertop and Advantium

Over-the-range (OTR)

OTR models have model numbers beginning JVM or PVM, and they double as a vent hood and a cooking light over the range. The GE JVM1851WD, GE JNM1541DMBB and GE GMR06AAPBB are Spacemaker models on our list, and the GE Profile GE PVM9225SRSS is 2.2 cubic feet. An OTR unit is mounted to the wall and cabinet above the range, so a swap or a service pull takes two people and careful handling. Its fan and vent also sit directly over cooking heat and grease, which is where odd noises and weak airflow come from. When the fan is the issue, the hood side has its own page: GE range hood repair.

Countertop

Countertop models begin JES or PEB, plus the JE series. The GE JES834WD is 8 cubic feet, a bigger unit than the GE JE610WF at 0.6 cubic feet. Countertop units are plug-in appliances, so owners can do a bit more: check the outlet with another device, confirm the cord is not damaged, and make sure there is space around the cabinet for airflow.

Advantium speed ovens

The Advantium is a speed oven rather than a plain microwave, and GE lists it under wall ovens, with PSB model numbers. A 120-volt Advantium shares the microwave family of F-codes. Its own F4 code covers an open or shorted humidity sensor: press CLEAR/OFF and reprogram, and if it returns, disconnect power for a minute or two. If it comes back after that, book a diagnosis.

Checks that are safe

Look at the plug and outlet, the breaker or GFCI that feeds it, and the door. A door that does not seat flush, or one with a damaged latch or hinge, will keep the oven from starting. Take out the turntable and its roller ring, clean them, and put them back so that they sit properly. Wipe food splatter from the cavity and around the door seal with a damp cloth; built-up residue near the seal can interfere with how the door closes.

Never operate a microwave empty, and never run it with metal inside unless the manual specifically allows that rack or tray. Do not remove the outer cover. A microwave stores a dangerous charge even when it is unplugged, and the cover is not an owner-removable part.

Display codes

Microwaves report faults with F-numbers, and GE points owners to a trained service technician for them. A short reference:

DisplayMeaning
F1Thermal sensor reads open after excessive heat in the cavity
F2Thermal sensor shorted
F3Touch pad panel shorted
F4, F5Humidity sensor open (F4) or shorted (F5)
F6Temperature probe shorted
F10Touch screen shorted

Three messages are friendlier. When Probe appears, the temperature probe is not plugged in during a temp cook setting, or reads open; seat it firmly in the microwave wall and in the food. PF, 888 or 8888 simply shows after installation or after power returns. The 18 power watch code points to the electronic control, so power-cycle first and expect that service may be needed. Everything is gathered on the error codes page.

What a diagnosis has to answer

A microwave that does not heat could be the door interlocks telling the control it is open, a sensor that has failed, or a fault in the high-voltage side. Each calls for a different repair, and some of that work is not safe for anyone but a technician. We start by confirming the simple things and reading any code, then isolate the path that is failing. Then you receive a written estimate that names the cause, and we repair only after your approval. If the unit is old and the repair is hard to justify, we explain the trade-off honestly; the guide to repair or replace a GE appliance shows how to weigh it.

Bay Area notes

An OTR microwave in a San Francisco flat usually shares a cabinet bay with a tight duct run, and in a condo the venting may go through a shared wall, which affects how the unit can be removed. Kitchens that were remodeled around a built-in microwave drawer or shelf often have little clearance. Near the coast, salt air in damp kitchens can corrode the exterior of a unit and its connectors over time, and in the hotter inland towns a countertop unit crammed against a wall with no gap runs warmer than it should. Mention the install when you book.

When to stop using the microwave

Stop and unplug if you see sparks, smell burning, notice smoke, or find that the door is bent, will not latch, or has a damaged seal. Do not run a unit whose door is damaged. If the unit trips the breaker or the outlet gets hot, leave it unplugged. Keep the door closed if there is smoke inside, and do not open it until the smell and the heat have passed.

Preparing for the visit

Have the model number ready. It is usually on a label inside the cavity edge or on the back of the cabinet. For an OTR unit, tell us how it is mounted and whether the range below is gas or electric. Our GE microwave guide shows how to read the number and what each type offers. Appointments go through the contact page or by phone, and the rest of our services are one click away.
