About this model

Model overview

Two jobs in one cabinet

An over-the-range microwave is a microwave and a vent fan sharing one box above the cooktop. The JVM in the JVM1851WD marks it as GE’s over-the-range type, and GE lists it in the Spacemaker group. A complaint can therefore come from either job, and describing which one saves a step. Does the food heat but the fan stay silent? Does the fan work but the cooking light stay dark? Does the microwave heat but not turn its plate?

Ventilation side

Grease collects on the filters beneath the unit. If your manual lets you remove and wash them, doing that every so often keeps airflow up, and a fan that has gone weak is often just clogged filters. Weak airflow that persists after cleaning is worth a diagnosis; our post on weak range hood airflow also fits an over-the-range unit.

Microwave side

Checks from outside are limited: the outlet inside the cabinet above is out of reach for most owners, so look at the breaker for its circuit. The display may show PF, 888 or 8888 after a power return, which is normal; see the PF code page. Other codes such as F1, F2 and F3 call for a technician.

Why heat from the cooktop matters

This type of microwave sits above a heat source. Boiling pots under it send steam and heat upward, and the F1 thermal sensor code in GE’s list is tied to excess heat in the cavity rather than the stove below, but a unit that is often cooked beneath should have its filters kept clean and its fan used. In a gas kitchen, a fan that fails to clear cooking fumes is something to mention.

Access and mounting

The unit is bolted to the cabinet above and the wall behind. A technician needs working room around the range below, so clear the cooktop and the counters near it. We take care of the unit; please do not try to unscrew it.

See GE microwave repair, the microwaves guide and, for the venting function, GE range hood repair. Estimates are in writing and repair waits for your approval.
