Error codeC4
ApplianceDishwasher
Background to C4
This code appears when the dishwasher fills a second time after power was lost. GE gives three possibilities: a float switch that is stuck, a float switch that has failed, or a drain or sump that is clogged.
Checks to make
Touch Start, followed by Cancel/Reset.
Tap the float cover so the float comes free. The cover is the plastic piece in the front left corner of the tub floor, shaped like a cup turned upside down.
Look for debris in the sump at the back, bottom of the tub. It looks like an upside down silverware basket and can become clogged.
A C4 that repeats is worth a call to (415) 729-2045 for dishwasher service in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Mention that the power had gone out, and which of the three checks you completed.
Model compatibility: GE reuses codes across series and model years, so C4 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The dishwasher filled twice after a power failure, possibly from a stuck or failed float switch or a clogged drain or sump.
Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
