When the front panel of this white GE dishwasher goes dark, beeps or shows a code, we start with the code and the cycle stage where it stopped.
GDF is GE’s front-control dishwasher prefix: the buttons and display sit on the front edge of the door instead of along the top. The 550 is a feature-pack level in GE’s scheme, where a higher digit group generally means more features than a lower one, and WW means white. This is a current GE model. We do not quote a capacity or noise rating because none is verified for it.
With a front-control machine the panel is both your first tool and a likely suspect. If it does not respond at all, test the simplest thing: is the door fully latched, and is the breaker on? If the lights are on but a cycle will not begin, read what the display says. GE publishes meanings for these codes:
| Shown | What it means | Owner check |
|---|---|---|
| GE Dishwasher Cup Open code | Detergent cup is not closed | Latch the cup, then press Start |
| GE Dishwasher C8 code | Detergent cup is blocked from opening | Remove the obstruction, latch the door, wait 30 seconds |
| GE Dishwasher PF code | A power failure occurred | Pick the cycle and options again, press Start |
| GE Dishwasher PrS code | Pressure sensor sending an invalid signal | Service recommended |
A display that shows a code is often reporting something mechanical. An H2O message points to the water supply: open the hot water valve fully, check the inlet hose is not kinked, and make sure the dishwasher is level (see GE Dishwasher H2O code). If the cycle runs but the tub is wet at the end, the issue is on the drain side, not the electronics.
Note whether the problem appears at the beginning of a cycle, in the middle or at the end. Mention any code and whether you reset power at the breaker. If the unit sits in a remodeled kitchen with panel-matching cabinetry, tell us how the toe-kick comes off or whether the dishwasher is boxed in tightly, because access shapes the visit. Many San Francisco kitchens are small, and a clear path from the entry door to the sink helps.
We diagnose first, put the repair in a written estimate, and do nothing until you approve. For background read GE Dishwasher Repair, the GE Dishwashers guide and the list of error codes.

Not necessarily. A door that is not fully latched can leave the panel unresponsive. Close it firmly, wait, and try again; if it stays dark we inspect it.
GE describes it as a pressure sensor sending an invalid signal, and recommends service. The cycle cannot start or is cancelled.
No. GDF is the front-control group; GDT is the top-control group.
Reading the code is fine. If the unit leaks or the code returns after a power reset, stop and book a visit.
