A 5.0 cu ft drum asks more of the floor
The GFW655SPVDS is a GE front-load washer (GFW) with a 5.0 cu ft drum, one of the larger sizes on our list, and a current model. A big drum holds a lot of wet laundry, and wet laundry that bunches to one side is the usual reason these washers stop with UE, the code GE assigns to an unbalanced load. The finish letters near the end of the label, DS, belong to the color code; we do not read the other letters.
UE: what to do
GE’s advice is to redistribute the laundry evenly and make sure the washer is level. For a drum this size, that means more than shuffling a towel. Open the door, pull the bundle apart, and mix heavy items with light ones. A single bath mat or a waterlogged comforter can unbalance the whole drum. More on that in GE Washer UE code.
If UE returns with a normal mixed load, look at the floor. Many San Francisco homes have old fir floors in the laundry closet or a garage slab that slopes toward a drain, and either can leave a front-load washer rocking by a few millimeters. Press down on opposite top corners; if the washer rocks, it is not level. The adjustable feet need a technician if the cabinet is boxed in.

A large drum and the door boot
