Model overview

What the GTE18MTRRWW is

The GTE18MTRRWW is a GE top-freezer refrigerator with 18.3 cu ft of total capacity. The freezer sits above the fresh-food compartment, which is the layout most households picture when they say “a regular fridge.” Reading the number from the left: G marks the GE line, TE is the top-freezer refrigerator group, 18 points to the capacity class, and the closing WW is the finish code for white.

A top-freezer has fewer moving pieces than a French-door model, so most faults come down to cold air not moving from the freezer to the lower compartment, a door that no longer seals, or a cooling cycle that stops short. The right answer depends on which of those is happening, which is why we look before we quote. Our general page on GE Refrigerator Repair covers the full range of families; this page stays with this one layout.

Symptoms that fit this layout

In a top-freezer, cold is made near the freezer and shared downward. When the lower compartment warms while the freezer stays frozen, the shared airflow is the first suspect. Ice crystals on stored food, a freezer that thaws while the fresh-food side is fine, or a unit that hums constantly each point somewhere else.

  • Fresh-food side warm, freezer cold: restricted airflow between the compartments. The post on a warm fridge section walks through it.
  • Compressor area running nearly nonstop: often dust on the condenser area or a worn door seal. See a fridge that never stops running.
  • Puddle inside or beneath: a blocked defrost drain or a loose water-related part, depending on where the water collects.

Checks you can make from the outside

Confirm the plug is seated and the outlet has power, then look at the breaker. Close the doors on a strip of paper; if it slides out freely, the gasket is not gripping. Keep food away from the interior vents so air can circulate, and make sure the back of the unit has a few inches of breathing room from the wall. Do not remove interior panels or touch anything behind the unit that belongs to the sealed cooling system.

If the display shows a message, note it exactly. GE Refrigerator CC code and GE Refrigerator FF code describe a temperature that is off or food that may be thawing, and GE Refrigerator PF code means power was interrupted. They are starting points for the conversation, not a diagnosis.

What to have ready for the visit

The model and serial label on a top-freezer is usually on an inside wall of the fresh-food compartment; the post on locating GE model and serial labels has the details. Bring a short list of what you noticed and when it started, and say if the fridge sits in a tight alcove or a garage. In San Francisco, many of these units sit in narrow Victorian kitchens with little rear clearance, and we plan the access before we arrive.

We find the cause, send the estimate in writing, and start work only after you say yes. You can book online or by phone. If food is spoiling, move it to a cooler first and tell us when you call. Other GE refrigerators on this site include the compact GE GPE12FGKBB and the larger GE GTE22JTNRWW; the overview of GE Refrigerators explains how the line is organized.
